about

The Preons Are: Josh Cowart, Janie Cowart, , Bradley Nelson, John Hendow

supporting musicians on the up and coming album:
Maria Leon Guerrero, German Nuestro

The Preons play music that is not easily placed in a single genre. Elements of rock, jazz, shoegazer and psychedelic come together in ways that are rarely heard. Siblings Josh on the guitar, and Janie on
the drums create a foundation that is surrounded by lucious keys, bass, trumpet, and melodica. When this is combined with partly haunting, partly revealing male and female vocals it becomes difficult to cite any single direct influence. But then again, why would you want to?

Who The Hell Is This Band?
Text by TOM HEALY photograph by: CHUCK TAYLOR

The overall sound of the Preons is a kind of pretty, dissonant art-rock with shoe-gazer leanings. The band has an English guitar pop sensibility and a Toad the Wet Sprocket-like organic pop-rock simplicity. They keep things fun and dance-poppy, with nice moody switches from major to minor, and the music mixes many levels of musicianship with keen songwriting instincts. The Preons feature Paul Graham on bass, Dan Lowinger on trumpet, Christopher Robinson on Vibraphone and Moog synthesizer, and Emma Valentiner plays keys and sings. Siblings Josh Cowart on vocals and guitar and Janie Cowart on drums round out the band. You may remember singer Cowart and bassist Graham previously from the rock band Hourglass Lake.

The band has recorded a three-song demo, contributed to a B-Side Records compilation CD with the Lashes, the Divorce and Dolour, and they released a solid five-song EP earlier this year. A full-length on B-Side Records is planned for 2004, as is a tour of Japan.
